Dog Painting: The European Breeds gives an historical overview of the extraordinary range of dog painting created in Europe during the nineteenth century. While ENglish artists dominated the field, many prominent European artists also produced a wide range of paintings. More than ninety breeds are portrayed here, from the lap dogs and hunting dogs of the aristocracy to the common shepherd dogs which were prized for their keen working abilities.

William Secord concentrates on the types of dogs and dog paintings which were characteristic of the countries of Europe, and discusses the different national attitudes toward dogs and the organization of canine societies. The idealized pet portraits of England and the highly bred canines of the Parisian salons are contrasted with portraits of Belgian street dogs, often studies in gritty realism. The many European breeds featured in the book are discussed and illustrated under five headings: Working and Herding; Hounds; Toys and Non-Sporting; Terriers; Sporting.

Just as the breeds developed in each of the European countries so did the various national schools of art. THis book compares the art worlds of northern Europe, France and Great Britiain and the numerous artists who have protrayed dogs, including Eugene-Jospeh, Verboeckhoven, Joseph Stevens, Rosa Bonheur, Gustave Courbet, MAude Earl, and Edwin LAndsser. All in all, over one hundred artists anre represented by some 440 full colour plates and ninety black and white illustrations.
