Alebrijes are fantastically colored and stylized animals brought to Mexican folk art fame in the 1940s by papier-mache artist Pedro Linares. They were so instantly beloved they were brought into other mediums of art by Linares's contemporaries and are a core part of Dia de Muertos.
While calavera is usually an edible or decorative skull made of sugar or clay, respectively, it has also grown in its representation during Dia de los Muertos to be painted on faces or animals.
These stud back earrings resemble a flying Xoloitzquintle and are a whimsical way of participating Dia de Muertos in a casual and contemporary manner.
